An orthodontist in Santa Clarita offers “two-phase treatment” options for pediatric patients with a goal of correcting potential orthodontic problems early.
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children visit an orthodontist when they first show signs of an orthodontic problem, and no later than 7 years old, according to Embrace Your Smile Orthodontics.

Early treatment, or Phase 1 interceptive treatment, can correct issues with jaw growth and the bite, while also helping permanent teeth come in properly, reducing the chances that extractions will be needed in the future.
In addition, early treatment can achieve results using less invasive methods as a child grows, according to officials.
“Some orthodontic conditions that develop at a young age can have long-term, permanent effects if not treated,” officials said. “Dr. Gilbertson, Dr. LeCornu and Dr. Weber will perform a complimentary exam and discuss with you specifically what your child needs. In most situations, this will simply be to continue to monitor the development of the patient’s teeth.”
A few examples of orthodontic “concerns” that can sometimes be corrected through early treatment are as follows: severe crowding, habits, open bite, deep bite, crossbite, large “overbite,” underbite, narrow jaws and severely protruded front teeth.
Then once a child’s face and jaws are fully formed, additional treatment, or Phase 2 treatment, could be needed.
